01.12.01 Saunabar, Helsinki Good happening, Greek folk, free jazz, bad magician, African food, Black Audio. There was only one vaguely functioning PA-loudspeaker and no monitoring so the sound was the crappiest ever, and we did not hear what the hell we were doing. Despite all of this some of the audience seemed to like it and some even came to thank us "for our full sound". Great. We had matching "INKA COLA" - t-shirts straight outta Peru. Happy birthday, Jaska. 27.10.01 Tavastia, Helsinki (w/ 22-Pistepirkko) The 22-PP guys were kind and asked us to come and play as their support at Tavastia. 800 people squeezed in. Of course they were there to see 22-PP but we got a warm response also. Mr. Autotehtaat sold High Scores and t-shirts. We played a short set. Good songs only. Stage sound was better than ever. Probably the PA-sound as well. It was all good. Thank you Pistepirkko dudes, the nicest rock-geniouses in the world. Set list: Switched Off - Rock'n'Roll Egos - Elvis Calling - Someone Else To Blame - Kalashnikov - Entertainer - See That My Grave Is Kept Clean (by Blind Lemon Jefferson). 19.10.01 Gloria, Helsinki (w/Pleasure Forever, Manifesto Jukebox, Imatran Voima) Show time 21.30. Good feeling. Not too many but enough people. Long versions of the slower songs. Applause. Band having fun. Big stage. Good food. A lot of toilets. Thank you, good night. 15.09.01 Kickstart Festival, Lutakko, Jyväskylä
08.09.01 VR: n makasiinit w/ Japanomatiks, Chainsmoker, Cleaning Women A Happy gig. Lots of people listening good and dancing. Band having fun and sounding good. Joakim Pirinen in the audience. Fanta in the fridge. Good people buying cd's and t-shirts. Rest in peace SPEDE. 05.09.01 YO-talo, Tampere w/Liekki, TV-resistori No disturbance on the delay machine this time. Sticky floor on the stage. Pepsi in those good old bottles, fine macaroni and excellent Creme Bonjour. Blind Willie McTell on the radio, a stick on the road. It's 3 a.m. 24.08.01 Semifinal, Helsinki w/ The Others No flaming hotpants. Some mild dancing, which is ok, and lots of people standing still. Which is also ok. We thought we sounded pretty good at times but got very little reaction, let alone interaction from the audience. After the gig it was surprising how many came to thank us for an excellent show. It was nice to hear that people liked our version of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" which we played the first time ever at soundcheck and the second time ever as our set starter. And of course, The Others were great. Wonderful music, wonderful people. Soul, baby, soul. Since "Hanoi Revisited" played upstairs at Tavastia, we witnessed Andy and Mike eating their pre-gig meals. Then watching the 22-Pistepirkko guys on and off duty it was interesting to see how being an international rock star affects different people. Others lose their touch with reality and THE Others don't. They just become professionals. 14.07.01 Ilosaarirock, Kerubi, Joensuu w/ Alamaailman Vasarat One of our best shows ever. Tickets were sold out and Kerubi was jam-packed. This time the audience got our slow songs too and this warm atmosphere helped us to come up with pretty good versions of "Switched Off" and "Rock'n'Roll Egos". And since it was a sold out festival club, the disco stuff set all the hotpants on fire. Wild dancing! Sauna-like temperature! People who knew the lyrics! Members of Napalm Death in the audience! Some guy doing MC Hammer dance steps on stage! All around happiness and both us and the dancefloor taken over by the almighty GROOVE! For the encore we played "Something Good" to calm things down and even that worked. Thank you, you wonderful Ilosaarirock people. M.T. Waver did the excellent mixing and Jean Hysz banged on the drum pad like a chimpanzee. And of course, the Kerubi sandwiches tasted damn good. At the actual festival site we saw Jimi Tenor's wild improvisations and Hämärä no. 5 rocking like maniacs in the parking area. Thanks to J. Saharinen & J. Uotinen for acommodation, tea & sympathy. And to members of Karvaiset Orjuuttajat for encouraging comments. 03.07.01 Imatra Big Band Festival, J´s 5, w/ Ceeolistics Again we had M.T. Waver takin' care of the mixing bizness and because he is a professional (unlike the band members) we spent two hours to get the maximum performance out of the PA system. During the soundcheck we even rehearsed a couple of songs. It was the third rehearsals in our four year history. Wild. For the actual gig we went on with no set list and started with "Something Good". After each song we spent a while thinking about our next move and it proved to be more fun than playing with a strict set list. Our slower and moodier stuff seemed to go a bit over people's heads but the groovy numbers created a warm and dance-happy atmosphere. This time we got even "Louisiana" right. In the grande finale of "Funk City" the audience eagerly shouted stuff like "Rajapatsas", "Hikinauhat" or "Imatran kaupunginkirjasto". Strange bunch of people. Quite a few bought our cds and DJ Bastu a.k.a. mr. Panhu photographed the whole show. Pics coming up. 15.06.01 Provinssirock Festival, Seinäjoki We were the opening act for Provinssirock's all new Aktivist stage, but a reasonable amount of people showed up and proved to be a nice dancing, along-singing and well-behaving audience. As usual, we started with our slow material and people seemed to groove along and listen good. Of course the funkier stuff fit the festival mood and a lot of happy dancing and good live-versions of our songs took place. Some englishman got our joke in "Elvis Calling" and totally cracked up when the name "Costello" presented itself in the lyrics. A new track called "Louisiana" proved to be too hard for us to handle and ended up being much more avant-garde than expected. Mr. Jean Hysz banged on the percussion pad and mr. M.T. Waver handled the Pa-system. It was all good and the audience "wanted more" but there was no time for encores in the hectic fest-schedule. The rest of the festival were spent pondering such questions as "Can music get any worse than Godsmack or Limp Bizkit?" "Is Jocka from the almost forgotten HotHit tv-show a funnier celeity than tv's Jani Juntunen?" "Did you see Jaarli Padington? They were LAME." and "What's wrong with people?". We also witnessed fine shows from Chainsmoker, Op:l bastards & Paleface, met old and new friends and got our fifteen seconds on radio-air and even on a teenage tv-show. Great. Extra special thank you goes to mr. Hannu Kanto for superluxus accommodation. Warmed floor in the shower. Mmm-mmm. 11.05.01 Puuteri, Hämeenlinna w/Aavikko Sorry, folks - not our finest hour. 07.04.01 Club Meduusa, Kouvola A big art student happening. In soundcheck it all seemed totally impossible. The big empty hall produced uncontrollable dub echoes & massive reverb. And the sound engineers seemed to like totally unbearable PA-volume. Luckily things had changed before we started and after some technical difficulties with the monitor system it was all ok. A big crowd. Stagediving. Fan hysteria. Even spontaneous hand clapping. Two encores. Afterwards a whole bunch of people wanted to buy our 7-inch vinyls but we couldn't be bothered. That's good business. In the morning we ate all the cheese. (Thanks, Deejay Sanna!) 09.03.01 Kolme härkää, Imatra Private birthday party. We've never played "Switched Off" worse, but the rest of the set went more or less fine - adults in nice clothes were dancing hard. Amongst them producer guru Mara Salminen & his spastic pelvic thrusts. After the gig we were puzzled by the local sound engineer's comments: "You guys ever heard of Magma? You sound just like them!". OK.
Jyväskylä funk city! The gig was great but the night after is really something to remember. We slept below ground level AND below freezing point. The result: two rocking pneumonias. |
